How can higher education help to cope with the global problems of humanity?

Last Updated on November 23, 2021 :

Humanity should undividedly work on resolving some of the oldest global social injustices, including and primarily hunger and human trafficking. There’s virtually no period during the written history of the world when there weren’t people starving or being sold for labor. There’s a consensus that education is the key solution to universal issues, and there is evidence that supports the claim. According to numerous private and governmental surveys, global society is reaching such scientific peaks, that it makes one think how is it possible that we still have people hungry and enslaved if we have resources for space exploration?

Is it possible that humanitarian sciences are not as commercial as tech and because of that there are not enough funds for research and advancements or should these global concerns include all of us, disregarding our workplace or level of education?

The role of education in dealing with human trafficking

The fact that human traffickers prey on all ages and genders, it’s imperative that this topic should be included in all stages of education. Through accordingly developed content, kids and parents should learn how to stay safe and recognize potential victims. In later periods, teachers could assign essays on concerns of this world-spread crime chain that bonds humanity. There are various examples of human trafficking essay topics that could serve as direction slips for law and criminology experts. At the university level, students could start volunteering at a university-organized help center.

The first-hand experience with the problem at the university level allows students to face this issue even more intensively through their professional careers. For a lawyer or a judge, knowing what victims of human trafficking experience and understanding the problem more intimately provides a substantial advantage when these types of cases occur.

For tech students, getting involved in human trafficking through education means working on projects such as tracking software, danger alert, and security solutions that would help local and international police gather evidence and prevent crime from happening. As much as hard punishments put criminals behind away from the streets, it’s imperative to prevent crime from ever occurring. Through a dedicated and planned educative approach, we could build a generation of experts that will change the world for the better.

Could education raise awareness on social issues?

The goal of every education system should be the development of skilled professionals that will contribute to long-term social benefits. However, it takes a collective effort to deal with issues that plague mankind for centuries or decades, depending on the nature of the problem. We learn about social relations from school and our closest environment and there’s a problem if the two don’t complete each other. If we’re not thought empathy or social responsibility at home, then our schools and colleges are the places where these traits should be acquired.

Adapting curriculums to focus some more on pressing matters that concern us all is an important task for every academic institution. Also, allowing students to organize and promoting student organizations that focus on social problems such as hunger and human trafficking is a valuable experience for both the faculty and students.

Can education eradicate hunger?

There’s an old proverb that says teaching a person how to fish is more useful than offering that person a meal, however, even the best fisherman is powerless if there’s no fish in the lake. War and lack of tech solutions cause hunger, so if scientists turn their focus in the right direction we could see much fewer people suffering through a famine.

Digital technology allows students to communicate and share knowledge with their peers from all over the world. There are many social issues essays contributed by students that are built on personal experience or that of a close relative. Through international student cooperation, young people can ask teachers for mentorship in the development of activities and programs. Furthermore, through youth education programs, postgraduate students can throw workshops for high school kids and raise awareness on the subject.

The bottom line should be the development of a strategy that would secure a generation of young scholars focused on feeding the world. Improved irrigation systems for areas where water is polluted or scarce would allow the local population to grow crops and secure food on its own. With each technological advancement that allows the starving population to grow food and deal with hunger in the long term, there’s less pressure on international food program organizations, which are all already stretched beyond measure.

Advancements in genetic engineering give the food industry the hope that plants will grow more crops with fewer resources. The mining industry also needs improvements because many traditional extraction processes spoil water and ground to the point where revitalization is either too expensive or impossible.

    Conclusion

Our generation has a responsibility to help humanity transit to a whole new level of thinking and living. From the other side of the forest and hill, we are now looking toward new planets but still, we have unresolved problems at home. To make sure humanity never forgets the burning issues we have here on Earth, our school system needs to evolve and become more diligent. The time is short so it’s up to universities to build experts that will pull the weight and lead future generations onward into society without hunger and slavery.
