Importance of Health and Safety in the Workplace

When it comes to health and safety, it gets ignored sometimes at workplaces. In this article, Andrej Kovacevic writes about the importance of health and safety (including mental health) for any career-oriented person and why health and safety training is essential.

4 Reasons Why Health and Safety Knowledge Is a Must-Have for any Career Person

By Andrej Kovacevic

Health and safety certifications used to be the preserve of a few people in management and HR.

Not so anymore.

Knowledge in health and safety is essential for any person who works in an office-even a home office. Certification is even better.

Whether you are in employment or running your own business, this certification will undoubtedly serve you well.

Here are four reasons why health and safety are important.

1. Safety is an Individual Task

At the core of any corporate health and safety policy is the concern for workers. Hence the need to implement strategies to keep employees safe in the workplace.

But when you think about it, your safety should be just as much your concern as it is your employer’s.

Knowledge in this field will draw your attention to the possible hazards in any work environment.

This awareness can help you assess the possibilities of anything going wrong that would result in an injury on your person or those around you. You can then take action to mitigate these issues.

Some workplace injuries can lead to paralysis and even death. This bluntly overemphasizes the need to approach personal safety as an individual responsibility.

2. It is More than a Legal Requirement for Employers

Your reputation as an employer today is pegged on more than just the paychecks you offer.

Being seen as an employer keen on employee’s welfare can go a long way in attracting top talent. It also reduces employee turnover, as employees are generally happy to work with, and for companies, they feel to have their best interests at heart.

It also gives your stakeholders and potential financier’s confidence in how you run your business.

3. Job Opportunities

With health and safety at the workplace being taken seriously across all industries, there is a healthy demand for trained professionals.

If you are an accomplished

professional, having additional training in health and safety, and can open up more opportunities for you.

For instance, take a small business that is not in the position to hire separate roles for a safety officer and a line manager. A candidate with both qualifications would obviously have the edge over other applicants.

There are both free and paid OHS courses in this field. However, paid courses are more detailed and give you the confidence and even the credibility to land roles with this requirement.

Should you go into entrepreneurship, you will not need to hire a safety professional nor pay a safety consultant.

4. Reduced Costs

Business owners understand the importance of maintaining healthy cash flows and minimizing expenditure.

Implementation of safety protocols is good for business.

A healthy work environment reduces employee stress, which is known to affect memory and decrease productivity. This can impact a business’ success in the long term.

Again, having a sound safety plan could go a long way in minimizing accidents. This ultimately means fewer instances of business interruption and even legal disputes.

Your insurer is also more likely to give you more affordable premiums than if they deem you to be a high-risk business.

These are alongside the penalties and fines that can be imposed on a business for non-compliance.

If you have read this far, it is not difficult for you to understand why health and safety knowledge is a must-have for any professional.

It will come in handy for you as an employee, and as a business owner, should you pursue that option.

And don’t get it wrong; this is not a fad as the situations that make this certification necessary will remain so in the future. As far as career investments go, this is a safe bet.
