What is a Masters of Engineering Management (MEM)

MEM is a professional Master’s Degree that bridges the gap between the field of Engineering or technology and the field of Business Management. Engineering Management is a multidisciplinary field that seeks to address problems associated with complex engineering operations or systems. MEM graduate programs are grounded in principles such as systems engineering, management science, project management, and financial analysis. The degree is popular among engineering graduates who want to get a higher management position or role in the corporate hierarchy.

How is MEM different from the Masters of Management (MiM) and MBA programs?

A Master of Engineering Management degree is more specialized than an MBA or MiM in quite a few aspects. The primary focus is on the leadership and management aspects that are required to manage large and complex technical and engineering projects.

Common core courses for these degree programs are likely to include topics in financial studies for engineers, engineering management, organizational behavior, decision making in engineering and strategic management for engineers.

      Eligibility Criteria for MEM Programs

Both Master of Engineering Management and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree programs, typically require applicants to fill out the necessary applications and submit official transcripts, the required test scores (GRE or GMAT), letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a resume.

Master of Engineering Management programs may have additional requirements of a minimum 3.0 GPA, a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a STEM discipline and work experience (1 – 2 years). These programs may also require students to have a solid background in Engineering, Calculus, Statistics, Science, and Physics. Some MBA degree programs may have a minimum GPA requirement as low as a 2.0. They also require applicants to have work experience in a few instances.

A Master of Engineering Management is a more technical degree program designed for Engineers while an MBA is a broader program for business professionals. Both degree programs vary greatly in their course topics and admissions requirements however; they prepare graduates for careers in leadership positions.
