      Why Bioinformatics for High School Students?

      Biology in the 21st century is expanding from a purely laboratory-based science to an information-aided one.

      Recent developments in both molecular biology and information technology have made biological data much more readily available to scientists and to educational institutions, and this growing amount of data has created an “absolute requirement” for the use of computers to organize, analyze, and process such information.       Advantages of Exposure to Bioinformatics in High School

      Bioinformatics is used to understand and treat genetic conditions, discern evolutionary relationships, and learn about how diseased cells and/or proteins (e.g. cancer cells) differ from normal cells and/or proteins.

      This program has been tailored for the bioscience students of Class 10 – 12. This is the most crucial growth period in terms of technical knowledge that makes a difference to the student’s career as well as to the scientific community.

      Day 1: Introduction to Molecular Biology, Omics (Genomics & Proteomics), and Bioinformatics

      • Students will learn the advanced theoretical concepts of Genes, Genomics, DNA, RNA, Protein, and Bioinformatics Tools.
      • DNA Isolation Experiment (hands-on) – we will teach you how to perform this at home

      Day 2: Evolution of the Novel Coronavirus with BLAST software

      Learn how the novel Coronavirus has possibly evolved with the help of the interesting BLAST software. It allows you to see the similarity between different species. It is awesome how a simple computer program can give vivid information about the origin of a virus!

      Day 3: Drug Discovery, CADD (Computer-Aided Drug Design) and Programming (R/Python)

      Appeal to your inner hidden scientist and learn how to develop drugs against COVID-19 from scratch. Discover today and lead tomorrow.

      CADD, or Computer-based drug designing, is the coolest tool out there, used by scientists across the world for the purpose of designing drugs. Why don’t you learn the tricks this winter?

      Day 4: Biochemistry

      • Introduction to Biochemistry: pH and Buffers
      • Soap Preparation (hands-on) – isn’t that cool?
      • Determining the Alkalinity of Milk (hands-on) – sounds fun, right?

      Day 5: Microbiology – COVID-19 Diagnostics and Therapeutics

      • What are the tests done for COVID detection?
      • RT PCR, ELISA, temperature and symptoms screening
      • MCQ test
      • The action of currently approved medicines and therapies against viral diseases
      • Schematic diagram of RT PCR or ELISA or plasma therapy
      • How vaccines are developed/manufactured?
