The 5 key areas MBA admissions committees evaluate the students

Are you applying for an MBA at the top-notch universities in the USA? Did you consider what type of applications stand out in MBA schools and what areas do the admissions committee evaluate?

MBA admissions committees focus on certain specific areas when it comes to evaluating candidates – From leadership skills to intellectual aptitude, a candidate is judged on various aspects. So, before you send out your application and apply at any university for MBA, consider these areas which admission committees really focus on.

5 key areas MBA admissions committees evaluate the students

Leadership: No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself, or to get all the credit for doing it.” — Andrew Carnegie.

The Admissions committees want to see a glimpse of a future successful leader. According to them, successful leadership is about deeply understanding the market and the X-factor of a company, motivating other employees and bringing out their passion to help them see the organization in a new way. Most importantly, helping a team to overcome great challenges by encouraging great teamwork, they evaluate if a leader is passionate enough to drive the firm to a successful journey.

Teamwork: To survive in the B-school, teamwork is highly essential. In the admissions process, team-based discussions and group interviews are often conducted, so that admission committee may get to know how well the applicant interacts with others and in the future, and if they can act as a strong member of the team and work efficiently.

Teamwork increases efficiency towards reaching the common goals and meeting up the deadlines. One of the greatest benefits of working in a team is the inspiration and ideas that can result from team discussions and there is a lot more scope for creativity in comparison to working on a project alone, it even enhances communication and shares the workload. This is why the admission committee gives importance to teamwork.

Work experience: Admission committees do not prefer to see the numbers of years you may have spent in working with corporations, but they are more interested in the credibility of the work you did with them. A candidate with previous work experience is always evaluated on the basis of work quality, duration of the projects that he has worked on, the role he has assumed etc.

The MBA committees always look for some sort of steady progress in your career graph in order to anticipate your success in the MBA arena – which is why so much heed is paid to the work experience.

Good Communication: Communication plays a fundamental role in the life of an MBA & tells a lot about a student’s personality too. In a course like MBA, building and maintaining good relationships among team and teammates is essential for the betterment of the team. This can only take place when effective communication within a team is encouraged and the team is encouraged to work in a more cohesive manner.

The admission committee evaluates “how well spoken are you and how well your communication skills will influence others in the future for getting them to do great work”. And if you lack any of these qualities, then it sure is a turndown for the committee to even evaluate you any further.

Intellectual aptitude: Students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and it is a myth that only financial-minds are capable of achieving an MBA. In reality, students with high mental aptitude, efficient skills, and creativity are considered ideal for MBA

Also, a creative approach is seen in the candidates to serve as a plus point and it is considered a mandatory requirement to be able to express yourself in an impressive manner and to be able to think out-of-the-box. In order to judge you on these factors, the business schools generally use a variety of essays and interview procedures.

To summarize, In order to gain an edge over other applicants, you need to differentiate yourself by highlighting your unique experiences along with your different strengths. Even more, you need to demonstrate what makes you interested in studying in a business school.
