Data is becoming the most omnipresent virtual quantity in the 21st century, and more valuable than ever. As experts say, Data is the New Currency (replacing Oil) in the Digital Economy. The amount of data is exploding. Therefore, analysis of that vast data, Big Data Analytics, has become a key requirement for edging competition, optimizing productivity, driving innovation, customer acquisition and sales. The ever-expanding volume and detail of data captured by enterprises & startups, the rise of social media, Machine Learning and Internet of Things (IoT) will further fuel the exponential growth in big data analytics for the foreseeable future.
Harvard Business Review declared Data Scientist as the sexiest job of the 21st century. As per the McKinsey report, the US will face the largest shortage of data science professionals – around 190, 000 professionals by 2018. Even PwC emphasized that data scientists, data engineers, and business analysts are going to be in great demand. But, Canada is also going to face a serious shortage (~19, 000) in the big data analytics domain within the same timeframe.

Graduate Programs in Data Science – University of Waterloo
It’s not a stand-alone program in Data Science. You could specialize in Data Science while studying either a Masters in Computer Science or Masters in Statistics.
For the Computer Science track, you need to have a Computer Science, Engineering or related degree with a minimum overall B+ (78%) average from a recognized university. You should possess sound knowledge of programming languages, data structures, operating systems, algorithms, computer organization and architecture and a background in calculus, linear algebra, probability, and statistics.
For the Statistics track, you need to possess an Honours Bachelor (4-year) degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or related degree with a minimum overall B+ (78%) average from a recognized university. You also need a solid background in calculus, linear algebra, and computer science.
The Data Science specialization in Computer Science and in Statistics share a common structure but with different emphasis depending on which specialization students are admitted to, their skill sets, and interests. It’s a new professional Master’s program, which has been developed by the combined expertise of UBC departments of Computer Science and Statistics. The 10-month accelerated program aims to meet the need of the students by giving a fast track to their careers.
