People reach out to me on LinkedIn, Quora and even on Facebook, looking for career advice about getting into data science or analytics careers.  Almost all of them are people I have never met. They read my blog articles on various platforms including Stoodnt. In the last six months or so, quite a few folks asked me about the data science and analytics programs in Canada, and the career prospects after studying in Canada. Data is becoming the most omnipresent virtual quantity in the 21st century, and more valuable than ever. As experts say, Data is the New Currency (replacing Oil) in the Digital Economy. The amount of data is exploding. Therefore, analysis of that vast data, Big Data Analytics, has become a key requirement for edging competition, optimizing productivity, driving innovation, customer acquisition and sales. The ever-expanding volume and detail of data captured by enterprises & startups, the rise of social media, Machine Learning and Internet of Things (IoT) will further fuel the exponential growth in big data analytics for the foreseeable future.

Harvard Business Review declared Data Scientist as the sexiest job of the 21st century. As per the McKinsey report, US will face the largest shortage of data science professionals – around 190,000 professionals by 2018. Even PwC emphasized that data scientists, data engineers, and business analysts are going to be in great demand. But, Canada is also going to face serious shortage (~19,000) in the big data analytics domain within the same timeframe. According to the recent IDC and Workopolis, there was a 7.8% increase in starting salary for Big Data graduates, with average salaries ranging from CAD $109,000 to $139,250 per year. Graduate Programs in Data Science – University of Waterloo

 

It’s not a stand-alone program in Data Science. You could specialize in Data Science while studying either Masters in Computer Science or Masters in Statistics.

For the Computer Science track, you need to have a Computer Science, Engineering or related degree with a minimum overall B+ (78%) average from a recognized university. You should possess sound knowledge of programming languages, data structures, operating systems, algorithms, computer organization and architecture and a background in calculus, linear algebra, probability, and statistics.

For the Statistics track, you need to possess an Honours Bachelor (4-year) degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or related degree with a minimum overall B+ (78%) average from a recognized university. You also need a solid background in calculus, linear algebra, and computer science.

The Data Science specialization in Computer Science and in Statistics share a common structure but with a different emphasis depending on which specialization students are admitted to, their skill sets, and interests. Both the tracks are seamlessly integrated with one another and provide breadth and depth in both areas as they pertain to the emerging and world-recognized discipline of data science. Master of Data Science – University of British Columbia

 

It’s a new professional Master’s program, which has been developed by the combined expertise of UBC departments of Computer Science and Statistics. The 10-month accelerated program aims to meet the need of the students by giving a fast track to their careers. It will provide the technical foundation and practical real-world data experience to prepare graduates to effectively translate data into knowledge, communicate the findings, and help decision-makers take action.

Students will learn data extraction for experimental use, application of complex techniques in data analysis and how to present and visualize the extracted data to domain experts. Utilizing descriptive and prescriptive techniques, students will extract and analyze data from both unstructured and structured forms.

You need to have a 4-year a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject with a minimum B+ (76% at UBC) average in your third and fourth-year courses. M.Sc. in Computing & Data Analytics – Saint Mary’s University

 

It is a 16-month professional Master’s program that combines two essential concepts of computing and data analytics: Software Design, Development & Management and Analytics & Business Intelligence. The program prepares students for rewarding and lucrative careers in the data science and analytics industry through experiential learning opportunities and industry interactions.

The industry partners for this program include IBM, SAS, Affinio, SimplyCast, LeadSift, Venor, REDSpace and few Government agencies. Applicants must possess a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or related field) with a cumulative GPA equal to 70%.

 

Master’s in Big Data – Simon Fraser University

 

The program provides deep knowledge of computer science to create new tools that find valuable data from the vast amount of information generated today. Students get prepared to become data architects, data scientists, programmers and chief data officers.

The curriculum has been developed with inputs from the industry experts like IBM, SAP, Simba Technologies, Tableau, and Phemi. This program is ideal for those with a strong aptitude in computer science, engineering or physics. The curriculum also includes a Co-op program (paid internship). Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a related field with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 3.00/4.33 (B).  Applicants ideally should also have programming experience, particularly in languages like Java, Python, and C++. 

 

Masters in Data Science and Analytics – Ryerson University

 

It’s a one-year MSc program. Students will develop a deep understanding of the technical and applied knowledge in data science and analytics along with interdisciplinary skills. The course aims to promote business growth, economic development, and employability.

The fields of study include core technical skills such as math, statistics, operations research, programming and domain knowledge that are in greatest demand in the international job market. This program will enable students to pursue careers in industry, government or research.

You need to have a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, Business or Economics with minimum 75% (aggregate in last two years of Bachelor program). You should also demonstrate understanding and working knowledge of statistics, data structures and algorithms, databases and R software packages. Hi, I am currently in my 4th year doing B.Tech IT from VIT University, Vellore. I was interested in the Master of Data Science program in University of British Columbia, i just wanted to know the job prospects of International students in canada in data science field. I mean would it be easy or very difficult to find jobs in canada?
