With 12th board exams now over, students are contemplating different career options to pursue. With the ongoing pandemic, job markets being tough and competition steep today’s youngsters must take into consideration factors like individual interest area, job opportunities and college rankings and prospect of courses while choosing their undergrad program. There are an array courses for students who want to pursue science and related fields after 12th board. These include Engineering, MBBS which tops the list for most science aspirants. Engineering courses

This continues to be the most sought after course after plus two science in India. The four year engineering courses can be pursued in govt. or private engineering colleges by cracking entrance exams like JEE Mains, JEE or other such exams held by the colleges.

The Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) is considered extremely difficult to crack by engineering aspirants in India. The exam is taken in two phases, JEE-Main and JEE-Advanced and the success rate is 1 in 45. Nearly 20 engineering colleges like the IITs, NITs and other centrally  funded institutions assess the JEE performance to select candidates. Courses available are engineering, architecture, design, technology, and sciences. Those who want to get enrolled to the UG courses at the IITs/ISM Dhanbad through JEE (Advanced) also need to take the test.

B.Sc. Courses

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or B.S. is again a very conventional and popular course after class 12. It can be done as part-time or full-time and one can take honours in subjects like physics, chemistry, economics, computer and mathematics.

After the B. Sc one can do M.Sc, go for research or enroll in vocational courses. Campus placements happpen in the third year at good colleges and universities and students get hired by MNC’s.

B.C.A

Bachelor of Computer Applications or BCA is a three year undergraduate course. The course is similar to B.Tech/B.E in Computer Science, and many universities and institutions in India offer it. The program includes skilled competence in developing software and develops handy skills to solve computer application’s problems.

B.B.A

Bachelor of Business Administration or B.B.A is also a three year undergraduate course and is divided in six semesters. The program provides comprehensive knowledge on the functional area of a company and develops executive traits and managerial and leadership skills. Other study components include knowhow on business processes, global business issues and role of economics in business and world markets.

Core subjects are Accounting, Economics, Operation management, Business Law and Ethics, Organizational Behavior, Marketing, Financial management, Human Resource management and other such. After BBA one can do MBA degree which highly recommended for better job prospects.

Architecture

Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) is also a well known undergrad course. The study area includes spatial design, safety management, aesthetics, material management, art of planning, designing, and constructing buildings and other physical structures. Career options are good, jobs are well-paid, and there are opportunities for growth.

Pharmacy

Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm), a four year job-oriented is for students interested in the medical field. Once done the career of Pharmacist is the best option where one can work in numerous industries related to the prescription, manufacture and provision of medicines in both public and private sector..

The program offers deep knowledge on drugs and medicines, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Medicinal Chemistry etc.

Commercial Pilot training

Yet another under grad course of 12-18 months duration is a perfect launch pad for commercial pilots and offers specialization in aviation and experience in pilot training.

Eligibility is plus two or equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics and Physics, Pilot Training includes ground training and flying training! The first one includes theory of Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology, Air Navigation, Aircraft Technical Subjects and RTR(A).

Bachelor of Planning

A 4-year full-time undergrad program, Bachelor of Planning is for students with a minimum aggregate score of 50% with Mathematics as a subject. The program has 8 semesters and once done one can either explore job opportunities or go for a master’s degree.

Bachelor of Interior design

Also a four-year undergrad program, Bachelor of Interior Design is about art and science of interior decoration of building/ residence. One has to qualify entrance tests held by colleges and perform well in the counselling round. The program has 8 semesters.

MBBS

AIIMS Entrance Exams – Every aspiring doctor dreams to clear this exam. This is mainly to avoid shelling out lakhs of rupees for a medical degree from a private college situated in a remote area of India. AIIMS is an autonomous body which holds its own pan India entrance test, the results of which are recognised by a great number of medical colleges.

The difficulty of getting selected in the test is easy imagine, given that students from all over the country are striving hard to make to the limited number of seats.

NEET – Held by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE Board), NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is for aspirants willing to get admissions to undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical and Dental courses in the country. Though not as tough as the AIIMs entrance test, NEET is also considered one of most difficult crack entrance tests in India.

BDS

BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) is a 5 -year Dentistry program. It includes 4 years of study and 1 year of internship. Nearly 291 colleges which include 39 government and 252 private offer BDS course in India.

Pharmacy

Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) is a four year job-oriented undergrad program in Pharmacy education. Students interested in the medical field (other than practising medicine as a doctor) can opt for this course after class 12th. Once completed one can take up the career of a Pharmacistand work in an array of industries related to the prescription, manufacture and provision of medicines.

B.A.M.S

Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (BAMS) is a 5 years and 6 month degree programme in Ayurvedic science, a branch of alternative medicine. It is a method of natural cure for ailments. The program consists of 4 and 1/2 year academic session and one year internship programme with practical.

This is a specialized course and students of Biology group (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) with minimum 50% marks in the 12th Board examinations can pursue. After completion graduates may either start practicing or go for higher studies and pursue PG courses or go for research.

Job opportunities include starting own clinic or starting a private practice. Private or Government Hospitals also recruit these graduates.

B.H.M.S

Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery is a 5½ years course and deals with medical knowledge of homeopathic ways of treating diseases. The program includes an internship. Biology Group (PCB subjects) students with a minimum score of 50% marks can pursue this course. One has to clear state entrance tests to study this.

B.Sc. Nursing

B.Sc. Nursing is a 4 years degree program and follows the syllabus prescribed by the INC (Indian Nursing Council), the body governing the feature of nursing education in our country. Hence while taking admission it is important to ensure that the institute is recognized by the INC. The program includes a comprehensive mix of classroom lectures and hands on sessions.

Many institutes have a merit based admission process where marks scored by students in 10+2 board examination and/or relevant entrance test (national, state or institute-wise) are taken into account.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy

Bachelor of Physiotherapy is of four  and a half years duration including compulsory 6 months of clinical internship and admission is through relevant entrance examinations. The course is about preventing disease and disability through the science of physical movement.

B.U.M.S

Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery or BUMS is a three year program for bio-science students scoring a minimum of 50% marks. 35 medical colleges currently offer the programme. Admission is through the national and state level entrance tests like NEET or KEAM.

B.A.S.L.P

BASLP course is of 4 years duration with two core subjects- Audiology and Speech Language Pathology.  Admission is merit based and is allotted to students on the basis of marks obtained in the plus two board examinations along with performance in state or national level entrance tests or the ones held by the institutions.

Training is imparted to become audiologists and speech language pathologists who are capable of preventing, identifying and treating speech, hearing and balance disorders in people.
